2nd XI vs Broxbourne IV. As the league season peters out we could still end up third if we won our penultimate match against Broxbourne and the other results went our way. Broxbourne have had a strange season, having to concede several matches and being bowled out cheaply in others (including by us), but they have also had matches where they scored in excess of 200 runs. So which Broxbourne would turn up today?
Broxbourne won the toss and put us in. After a bright start KW was out caught off a leading edge from a full toss by the smallest bowler that we’d faced all season (he said he was 13 but looked 10). DB joined Dan and pushed the score along to 93 before Dan was out LBW for a creditable 28, including, surprise surprise, a beautiful late cut for four, that was definitely meant! After a brief appearance by Ben, Dave was joined by Kash and Dave continued to play his best innings of the season before getting tired and missing a straight ball (from their best bowler, of course), having scored 68 and the team on 161 for 4. Kash continued for a while, scoring 32 but looking set , before he too was bowled (same bowler, of course). Everyone else chipped in with a few but we only managed to bat 46 of our overs, albeit for 203 – would it be enough?
Our bowling line-up looked a bit thin without a genuine quick bowler and we only had three ‘regular’ bowlers, although we had others who had bowled on occasion. Fletch opened the bowling and Broxbourne started very well, quickly getting ahead of the required run-rate, with their Sri Lankan captain looking in very good form. At the other end Mally dropped straight in to his line and length, as usual, although there were a few wayward deliveries at first.Just as we were starting to get concerned the opposing skipper drove a ball straight back over Fletch’s head, when a hand shot up, parried the ball and caught it as it came down – a spectacular catch to set us on our way.
We still had to wait a while for our next wicket, which was Mally’s first for several weeks, an edge and well caught by Ben behind the stumps. DB was bowling well at the other end and chipped in with 2 wickets, bowled, before Tayyab joined the party with 3 wickets, 2 bowled and one caught by Arron. Ammar replaced DB and, although a bit wayward to begin with, he took a return catch when the batsman misjudged his slower ball. With victory now in sight Broxbourne started stage a recovery at 8 wickets down and 2 overs from Kash helped their cause before Ammar, returning at the other end in the dark had the number 10 caught by someone in the deep, who had clearly been eating carrots recently. The victory was complete when Ammar bowled their last batsman.
A good team effort from us in an enjoyable game, but unfortunately Northwood also won so we are assured of 4th place with one game to play.

2nd XI vs Broxbourne IV. DB won the toss and decided to bat on the best Saturday for cricket of the season so far – sunshine and warmth. KW was duly informed he had picked the best day to be ha’way in Newcastle having complained all season about playing in the grey/cold/damp conditions…
Dan and DB opened up and took advantage of some erratic bowling at one end while holding the more accurate bowler at bay at the other. DB played a good knock of 28 – even managing to hit two balls off the square on the off-side before being caught behind. Dan and then Paul in partnership with Norm at 3 kept things ticking along, Norm eventually out for 44. Things really accelerated when Robbie came in up the order at 5 and produced an excellent knock of 60, not exactly chance-less but a maiden 50 and a league one at that – well done Robbie. Peter Fletcher played nicely for 24 before Willow came in at 10 and gave it some heave-ho, scoring 27 to take us over 230. Given Broxbourne had scored 200+ in the last 2 games, we felt 220/230 was what we needed.
KW was duly informed he had missed our best batting performance of the season and probably a chance for a 50…
Don’t think anyone could quite foresee what followed, least of all the bowlers. Willow cleaned bowled the opener third ball, who had previously scored 100s in his last two games – so we had the key wicket but any side who gets 200 must have others to chip in so we were by no means complacent. However, wickets fell at regular intervals – Mally and Willow both bowling very straight with only 2 wides in the 17 overs the 2nd innings took to complete. Excellent fielding – all catches held including sharp ones behind the stumps from Robbie, and Paul at slip, combined to leave Broxbourne 41 all out.
KW was duly informed he had missed our best bowling performance of the season…and beer from Gary for Robbie’s ‘jug’. Still, Hadrian’s Wall is very nice at this time of year…

2nd XI vs Redbourn. Lunchtime, we arrived ready in DRIZZLE it must be Saturday! Sure enough a delayed start on the horizon, fortunately the pitch was covered with a tarpaulin which meant as soon as the drizzle stopped play would be just around the corner. 1.07 start and we had won the toss and decided to bat. First ball went for 4, second we were one down to a ball which lifted and move down the gentle slope. The going was tough, even with a shortish boundary, wickets fell at regular intervals. Brief hope of a total with Dave B, looking very comfortable getting 20 before falling and then Robbie hitting 19 off 18 balls before missing 'the straight one' didn't materialise. Rain came and after playing through a bit, it was becoming too heavy so play was suspended after 35.1 overs on 113-8. An early tea was agreed at 3.29.
We had to receive a minimum of 40 overs for it to be deemed a match so we resumed at 5.02 and received just 4.5 overs before the rain came again, ending our innings on 121-9. During the break, furious calculating went on and we agreed that if the rain stopped, Redbourn would receive reduced overs depending on the time remaining and also if any further rain fell causing a stoppage that the match would be called off. At this time we were receiving messages from around us with games already been called off, it wasn't looking good.
True to form the weather as un-predictable as our batting, cleared and in some of the best weather of the afternoon we resumed with Redbourn to receive 30 overs game on!
Mally and Bilal opened and bowled quite tightly with the oppo 5-1 off 4 overs. Their No 3 came in and batted strongly hitting 55 off 47 balls to put them in a good position. Meanwhile we had been chipping away at the other end and when he was out, were 97-4 off 18 overs. We were a little loose in the field, although only one chance went down, the rush of blood went to the head on a number of possible run outs and resulting overthrows. Needing 24 off 12 overs the odds on a Compton win were long, However, it took them another 10.3 overs to get the 24 runs needed to win and we took one more wicket. Mally bowled through the innings ending on 4-49, Tayab and Bilal also bowled tightly, the former taking a spectacular catch running in from the boundary. The game ended at 7.48 in sunshine!
In the circumstances, another 20 runs may have seen a different end. Home next week, forecast for the main part of the week is dry, so you know what that means........... where's those tarps?

2nd XI vs Hertingfordbury II. On a damp and rather dismal afternoon (shades of Preston game 2 weeks before but not quite as wet), DB won the toss and decided we should field. Bilal and Cameron opened the bowling with a sustained spell of pressure but not immediately taking wickets. However, in the 12th over, we finally had a breakthrough followed by another 6 overs later and H'bury were 33/2 - Bilal taking both and adding a third to leave the oppo 61/3. His 15 overs cost just 30 runs with 6 maidens, and he barely looked out of breath for the first 3...
Tayaab (2/44) and Mally (2/47) as first change each picked up 2 wickets in what was a very slow scoring first innings, combination of wet and slow outfield and when the ball did cross the rope, it took ages to find it. By 50 overs the score was just 150/7 but some late hitting cost 28 to the total.
An excellent Tea followed (thank you Jess).
The Compton reply got off to a reasonable start with Keith and Boris reaching getting to 21 but a succession of 'missing full toss' syndrome suddenly descended as one by one the top order succumbed having done the hard work and reached double figures - Keith 11, Boris and Moxy both 13. DB got 8, and was heard to be identifying a fault with his bat as the main problem behind recent poor scores. Keith suggested he wasn't getting his weight behind the ball, which someone else commented wasn't really the problem at all...
Some resistance followed by Messrs Wallis (Cameron 29, Robbie 28*) and at one point it looked as if we might make 130/140 but wickets fell again despite a series of firm forward defensives from Mally carrying out the skipper's instructions to the letter before one popped up and into short leg's hands. Robbie and Bilal managed to survive the last few overs and saved the draw but not many points and a fairly unmemorable game.

2nd XI vs Watford Town III. This match was billed as being the most important match of our season so far. We were eagerly anticipating playing another so far unbeaten team and expected a tough match, which indeed it turned out to be. Watford Town were easily the best team that we have played this season and on a par with the few other sides that we have played over the last few years that have gone unbeaten for whole seasons.
Winning the toss Watford decided to bat first and we claimed our first wicket in the 6th over when the more stylish opener top-edged DB and was well caught by Bilal off a rank bad ball from Tayyab. This gave us great hope which was quickly dispelled as the number three unleashed a barrage of the most elegant and fluent shots over the next 17 overs before he was run out by a direct throw from a super piece of fielding by Moxy for 70 chanceless runs. This put the brakes on for the next few overs before the other opener started to hit across the line with amazing timing and strangled appeals from our bowlers for LBW. If only he’d missed the ball!! Wickets fell regularly at the other end and when the opener finally edged a ball from DB to Moxy, it looked as though we might keep the score down to around 200. However, more swinging from the lower order batsmen allowed them to finally post a score 248 – 9.
We didn’t really do much wrong: 2 balls hit extremely hard to the right and left of bowlers were stopped but not caught, not really surprisingly given the speed they were travelling. Aside from that we bowled and fielded well and with the exception of the one classy batsman, most runs were scored off wild swings with balls falling in between fielders or just going overhead on several occasions. However, they did have batsmen who had a good eye and although they hit wildly, they managed to middle most of their shots. Our wicket-takers were: Moxy who took 4 wickets for 39 off 9 overs, including 2 wicket maidens; Tayyab, 2 for 37 off 10 and DB, 2 for 49 off 10.
Our response did not start well with KW out LBW for 0 in the second over and when Dan Vann was caught for 13 in the 16th over we only had 39 on the board. Our task then became one of trying to get as many bonus points as possible and with DB batting well several batting bonus points were there to be gathered. Unfortunately he couldn’t find a partner to stay with him long enough to build a meaningful stand and after several came and went, he was finally out for 27 and were still well short of 110 and our first batting bonus point.
This all changed when Tayyab strode to the wicket to partner Mally and proceeded to hit the ball to all corners and inspiring Mally, who had previously played and missed most of his previous deliveries, to hit several scoring shots. They put on 38 before Tayyab he was caught out for 23. Bilal strode to the wicket with 1 run needed for our third batting point, which he duly scored before Mally played and missed a straight ball.
A heavy loss but 12 bonus points collected against a team that batted confidently and also bowled and fielded extremely well and look likely to win most, if not all their games.

2nd XI vs Botany Bay III. This should have been a report of our game against Hatfield Crusaders but they extended our unbeaten league run to 4 by conceding the game on Wednesday. Late on Friday we heard that Botany Bay’s opposition had done likewise so a friendly was arranged and we replayed our recent match with them when we were victorious. Both sides were changed, they more than us, with a significantly older team.
Winning the toss the Bay decided to bat first and batted a lot better than out previous game. However, our bowling was quite tight (most of the time) and we restricted them to 163 – 8 off their 40 overs. Unfortunately I don’t have the details of the Bay’s innings but all of our bowlers except one took wickets, with our regulars: Willo 2 for a few, Mally 1 for not many and Tayyab 1 for a few more, all bowling 8 overs. The Fletch and Niam both recorded their first wickets for the club but Dan Vann managed to get 2 wickets for surprisingly few runs bowling his gentle pie-chuckers that may or may not have turned a bit, depending on who you talked to.
All in all a reasonable day at the office.
Our response started brightly enough with 17 off the first 4 overs, before Deano got a well-pitched up ball to nip back and clip KW’s off stump. The skip then joined Geoff P and kept the scoring to just under 5 an over before Geoff was stumped, the Fletch was run out without scoring and DB was lbw. Suddenly we were 42 – 4 off 15 overs. Niam then joined Dan Vann and pushed the score along to 56 before Niam was bowled and Tayyab strode to the wicket with 108 required of 20 overs. After adding 3 runs in the next 3 overs Tayyab and Dan started to accelerate with some lusty hitting (some may say slogging). Tayyab was finally caught after having scored 25 in a 52 run partnership, with Ammar and Kash following fairly quickly after. Our assault finally ended when Dan was out for 37 in the 36th over and Mally followed in the next over with our score on 129.
A defeat, but it was only a friendly and we did experiment with some bowling changes and our batting line-up, and everyone enjoyed what would have otherwise been an afternoon watching the Gooners win the Cup.. yeuk!!!

Tipton St John. Woke to a sunny but breezy morning, breakfasted well and prepared for our short journey to Tipton. Our journey didn't start well getting caught by on coming traffic up the hill!. reversing up the hill, slotting into gaps to allow the 'convoy up'. This meant our arrival at Tipton was delayed, the opposition all changed, ready to go - for once we were late but we did think it was a 2.30 start.
We won the toss, Bradley opened with Liam, the former smashing 19 off the first over! Looking good we thought, when Brad missed 'THE STRAIGHT ONE'.
Peter joined Liam and proceeded to hit good and bad balls - receiving six reprieves before falling at the 7th attempt for 56 his maiden club half century. Supported ably by Peri, who joined Peter after Liam brief appearance. Peri also hit 51, with some mighty blows but both fell in close succession seeing the run rate slowing dramatically. Adam, Robbie and Carl all reaching double figures saw us reach a healthy 185-9 off our allotted 40 overs.
We opened strongly with Peri and Carl some pace and in hindsight perhaps too strong, Peri 3-5; Carl 1-4 had them 7-4 in 7 overs! The wickets continued to fall regularly with Chloe chipping in with a very impressive 4-11 of 6.1 overs. This saw the opposition bowled out for 47! Adam and Paul also chipping in with a wicket a piece. Everything we did seemed to come off and no where was this more evident when Mark, fielding at 1st slip - stuck out a hand only to find the ball firmly stuck in place off a very big edge. it was left to Chloe to dispatch the last batsman to the pavilion. A win, where we played well and the oppo had a bad day - hopefully all resolved over a pint in the Golden Lion. Clyst Hydon here we come!

Clyst Hydon. Willo opening the bowling took two early wickets - signs were looking good. This brought Dhan the overseas to the wicket and Clint the 'saffer'; 147 runs later they were 3 down for 165! Basically, Willo bowled too well in removing the openers so everything that followed was down to him - or that's what some people would have you believe.
It was a hot afternoon, Geoff 'ball magnet' Pierson was requesting and receiving water at every opportunity. he was fielding long on at both ends and constantly in the game. The afternoon was warming up, Ron was cooking nicely. Dhan was hitting the ball well and racing towards a very quick hundred when leading wicket taker on tour Chloe struck, a family affair with brother Adam taking the catch as Dhan holed out for 99! Thought things would look up but the 'groom' fro Sunday's wedding at Clyst strode to the wicket thumping 65 (5 sixes; 6 fours) in no time - so much so that the oppo declared on 300, two overs early! The task ahead was daunting but we stuck at it, Peter claiming two catches and a sore shoulder. Chloe ending up with 3-46.
Our reply was soon in trouble 12-2 in 3 overs. Bradley and Robbie settled the ship a little taking the total to 81 before both fell quickly 84-4. carl and Peter at the wicket batting well- unlikely to get the target at this time although Peter went on to score another 50.
Over's and wickets falling away we eventually ended up 209-7 in our allotted overs.
However this is not the whole story - a holidaying Arron P was sun-bathing at the far side of the ground 'listening to a few tunes'; when he discovered that he had a hidden talent. He could talk to the cows! Moo-moo was the call - the cows approached this half-naked man (said it was HOT!), with black eyes (sunglasses). Walking along the fence, the herd of black and whites followed this icon - to & fro; up & down the cows followed this amazing man. Would he dare? Yes, he dared, over the fence he went into his 'flock'- it was a sight to behold rolling in the grass, avoiding the odd 'patt' he engaged with his flock. Budleigh Salterton. Arrived for an early start at 12.30. Opposition skipper meets Carl and says 'we are pretty strong today'. 'Oh, we're prety weak and only have 10! Don't worry our overseas won't bowl and we will bat him down the order. 1st XI skipper batted 3; overseas batted 5!!
A good tea.
Our reply was lacking enthusiasm, Bradley opened scoring 29, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Carl hit a strong 46; Willo defied the odds and scored an offside 4! Our last two bravely put off the inevitable, Liam hitting 4 from a reverse sweep first ball, as we ran out of overs.
Cannot go without mentioning Charlotte who stepped up and played for the first time in a while, batted and bowled well 3.0.48.0. She was up against their Zimbawian World Cup squad member who hit 65 off 39 balls, this after he faced brother Bradley and played out a maiden over, highlight of the afternoon.

Kilmington. Another sunny day, but with a bit of a breeze. A visit to the Hare and Hounds and farm shop for a spot of lunch, musical cars in the car park-where is the safest place to park, for fear of high flying cricket balls! We welcomed Greg Spence and Brian to our team as we entered the field. Really tight opening overs from Chloe, Peri and Peter saw early wickets fall and runs limited. Adam as Captain saw that we could be heading for a 'Budleigh' but in reverse opened up the bowling from one end. Although wickets, 6 in all still fell, runs began to accumulate and we were looking at a total of 184 to chase.
Another good tea saw us start our reply with Robbie and Brian. Unfortunately this partnership did not last long as Brian had to retire with a muscle strain. Greg followed quite quickly which brought Carl to the middle. Here he stayed playing quite beautifully, supported by Robbie at first (27); Geoff and Adam to a very classy 102. A top knock by any standard. We were seen home by Bradley and Peri with 3.4 overs to spare.
The end of Tour 2015, on the field!!! New Inn for an after match 'chat' and then back to base, some facing an early start for home in the morning.

Southgate Compton 2nd XI
On a bright blustery day but following rain on Friday DB just had to win the toss and put them in! Alas, it wasn’t to be and Compton found themselves batting first on a difficult track against Botany Bay. The first over showed that the openers would definitely have to dig in and bat cautiously, with the fifth ball seaming back and popping, passing KW between bat and chest. This was to be repeated frequently from the opening bowler, over the next ten overs, plus a couple of grubbers. So the runs would have to come from the other end but Paul B edged his first ball to gully, 0-1. Dan came in and with KW put on 38 before he fell to their skipper for 7. DB was looking in good form before a direct hit was given out “it was close though”, by their umpire, 60-2.
Meanwhile KW was steadily accumulating runs and now with Kash took the score to 90, before he chased a leg break outside off and was caught behind for 58. Moxy came and went, stumped and then Robbie joined Kash who was carrying on where he left off last week. At this time there were leggies at both ends and their temptation proved too great for our batsmen, firstly with Kash miscuing to cover for 36, Robbie bowled by one that kept low and then everyone else giving catches for not many runs to various parts of the field. Our total of 141 off 43.5 looked about 30 short of a competitive score. We came out after tea knowing that we had to bowl and field well to stand a chance and when Willo’s first ball, well outside the off stump was chased and skied to Moxy in the covers, they were 0-1, just like us but 6 balls sooner. That was the last chance for several overs and just when we were starting to get concerned about the partnership that was building, DB and Mally bowled both batsmen in consecutive overs, and we were on our way. The next 3 bats didn’t stay around for long, victims of three good catches by Paul B, Willo and Kash, before the danger man w/k came in. By now Mally had completed his 10 overs, bowling 4 maidens and taking 2 for 21 and Tayyab had come on, hitting the spot straight away. The next bat was bowled for 1 by Tayyab and the skipper then joined the w/k at the crease. There then passed several overs where we were quite content to let the bats slowly progress, with our total looking more and more out of their reach. Finally Tayyab bowled the w/k for the second year running just before completing his spell for 10 overs, 5 maidens taking 3 for 14. Ammar had replaced DB at the other end and returned respectable figures, conceding 19 runs off 6 overs. Moxy replaced Tayyab and after a couple of wayward ‘beamers’ bowled their skipper in his first over. Willo returned at the other end and should have got the last wicket when the ball was edged between first and second slips but Kash moving across put Moxy off and the ball was grounded. Moxy made amends by getting the last bat to sky the ball to Dan at cover, all out 99. This was clearly a bowlers wicket and we have a very impressive bowling line up, with Willo bowling 5 maidens in his 9 overs for 1 wicket and DB taking 2 for 28 in his 7 overs. However, the biggest improvement has been our fielding with 5 catches taken and most pleasing is the way that Robbie is gaining in confidence behind the stumps. On a day when the ball was seaming and popping Robbie only conceded 3 byes, and he was standing up to Mally and Tayyab, and Tayyab in particular bowls left arm round quite quickly at times. Well done Robbie! |

A new season begun... with the same old faces having the same old arguments. Ma - we've got a real good side on paper. Ron - yeah, but we always arse the batting up..
Who'd be right? Losing the toss, we were bowling and Raja was soon in the wickets, a nick behind and bowling another. Shorty supported well at the other end and despite bowling in good areas didn't get much out of the slow wicket. Liam's introduction brought two more quick wickets - including a rank long hop that was dipping enough for a lbw. We had them 40-4 but a combination of patient batting and some dropped chances saw them recover to 106 before the next wicket fell. Brad bowled tight, including 4 maidens and Hassan bowled his best spell for Compton as we limited them to 164 off their 50. Despite being shown how to bat on the two paced wicket. Our top order went hell for leather with too many giving the infield catching practice. Brad hit some great shots picking the right ball to attack before getting over excited and bowled. Sam tried to build a partnership making 18 in the process but it wasn't until Adam and Liam came together for the 9th wicket that we finally knuckled down; they took us from 97 to over the line; a fine partnership - meanwhile Boris, next man in, wore his shoes out lapping the ground (at least 10 times) waiting to come in! A great effort. That said, although we bat all the way down, the top order needs to give us a solid start to build on going forward. Ron moment of the day; OWZAT! [Big lbw shout] "not out", a moment later "DAVE, get me glasses, left em on the tea table"! |

SC lost the toss and were invited to bowl. Bilau and Peri opened up and Northwood Town found the bowling hard to get away and losing a couple of wickets in the process, Bilal ended up with figures of 10/2/17/2 - an outstanding effort. Willo replaced Peri and bowled an economic spell, unfortunately wicket-less but Northwood had less than 80 on the board at drinks. Wickets for Tayyab, Mally and the skipper completed the haul.
The SC reply got off to a brisk start, with Keith Walker compiling a well-struck 25 along with Dan Vann's eventual total of 35. A bit of a wobble in the middle-order left the 2s 4 wickets down with well over half the runs still required but a long partnership between Dan and Kash (57*) and then Robbie Wallis (15*) for the 6th wicket led to a comfortable victory in 40 overs. A few lessons learned about the new format in terms of needing, effectively 6 bowling options and new rules on wides as well. |
