We wish to extend our gratitude to all those who have helped and served Southgate Compton Cricket Club over the years and thank you and your family for your efforts.

Shirley Adlam

I am sorry to report that Shirley Adlam has passed away at the age of 84. Shirley had been with Southgate Compton since it’s founding in 1970 when Southgate County Old Boys merged with Compton CC, her husband Peter was a Compton player. Shirley had 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls, who always seemed to be at the club, when it was very much family orientated and was very much a social hub. All 3 boys, Peter Junior, Andrew and David played for the club and on several occasions they were all in the same team as Dad. In the late 70’s Shirley took on the most important job of tea lady on Saturday and Sunday, which she undertook for more than 20 years. She was a very sociable person and after everything had been tidied up she enjoyed a chat with a glass of Babycham.

Shirley was appointed a Vice President in the early 2000’s,joining her husband Peter in that position.   

Kenny Spence

Kenny Spence joined us in 1974 with his friends Jim Grocott and Pete Titchener all 3 of them went into the 1st team from day 1. Kenny was a very stylish opening bat, two of his best shots were the back foot drive and the hook. He was also a fast bowler who could be quite erratic but very effective on his day.

Kenny was part of the best side we have ever had which was pre league, all games were friendlies. However we were very successful in cup competitions winning the AMCC Competition (20 overs) in Enfield in 1978 and 1979. We also won the 6 a side Indoor Competition  in 1979/80 and 1981/2 and the Gerry Lilee Trophy Middlesex County in 1979/80. In one of the AMCC finals we played against Southgate Adelaide who had the Australian Ray Bright playing for them. Kenny was Saturday 1st X1 Skipper in 1979 and 1981.

He took part in several of our Annual tours to Devon before he moved to Hampshire. Some 10 years ago he contacted us and asked if he could play on tour as he was now living in  Devon. He turned out for us at Budleigh Salterton and Kilmington for several years together with his son Tom.
Kenny was a fine all round sportsman, he played football for Southgate County 1st X1, was a very good golfer and keen tennis player. He was very popular and  well regarded member of the club.  He was 72.

Dennis Parkinson

I am sorry to say that Dennis Parkinson has died at the age of 62. He joined us from our near neighbours Cockfosters in the 1970’s and was part of our successful cup winning side of the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was a medium fast bowler who could get the ball to bounce very steeply and was a very effective hard hitting middle order batsman. On a tour game at Kilmington we were chasing 251 in 1 hour and 20 overs, Dennis scored 94 to win us the game, the final 82 coming in just 11 overs. He moved away to Hatfield Peverel in the late 80’s but was approached to play in our first Presidents Day in 1993. He captained the President’s side and did so for several years.

He also played for Southgate County FC and was a prolific goal scorer, he is 7th in the all time list with 237 goals, many for the 1st X1
