SCCC won the final league at Dunstable with an emphatic victory.
However, we once again let the oppo off the hook a bit, not capitalising on enough chances to let them recover from some early breakthroughs from Raja's varied(!) bowling. We did however wrap up the final wicket just before Dunstable could get the 2 points they needed to guarantee their safety. Another 5 for for Liam (I think), he was chuntering away to himself at the end of the game that no one said well bowled (so probably). "Well bowled Liam". Adil was explosive with the bat, a quick fire 70 odd didn't leave much more for the other batsmen to do. A miscommunication saw Hassan (possibly!) run out and there weren't enough runs for Carl to be interested so he did his usual gully catch. Cammy and Al saw us home, Al smashing an almighty six to end the season in style! A solid season and with a bit better availability (all holidays next year are cancelled!) and a couple of new faces we can build on this in division 87 South South East of Herts/Beds/Yorkshire League. |

Holtwhites won the toss and put the 2s into bat, Dan and Peri opened up. Peri attacked from the first ball and scored a quick 16 before being bowled. Robbie suffered the same fate without troubling Del in the scorebox and Deleep also perished in single figures. 31/3 and we were in somewhat of a tricky situation. Kash and Dan at first stemmed the tide of wickets and then took advantage of some fairly generous bowling, and eventually put on well over 120 for the 4th wicket before Kash finally was out for a superb 73. Sobers and Arron kept the momentum up with Dan still at the crease to keep things ticking along. Dan was finally out for 60, his 3rd half-century of the season and at home! Ben (18*) and Mally (13*) put on 30 odd for the 8th wicket.
Another super G.Wallis tea followed and we stumbled out on the field having rather overdone it on the brownies and scones (again). Peri and Fawad opened up and Peri found it hard going to find his line despite several really good quick balls, Fawad bowled economically and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Mally and Ed were the first change and the run rate slowed a bit with regular wickets at both ends. Things were changed again at the football ground end with Tayyab bowling a useful spell and taking a key wicket which ended a good partnership. In the dark and gloom it was very hard to see the ball and with 6 overs left Holtwhites still needed 30 odd. Robbie bowled a very economical spell of 3 overs conceding less than 12 runs, and Ed at the other end kept it tight enough despite a series of wides which one might say gave generous interpretation of the LBW law. With 8 needed off the final over they could only manage 2, resulting in an honourable draw which was a fair result. Well done to all who played in the 2s this season, a bit up and down but the last 2 games were good performances. |
Sunday XI
With limited bowling (Boris and Porges both bowled 8 overs!), 10 men, and when wickets were not forthcoming, we did well to keep Roving Reporters to only just over two hundred, and to limit the opener to bringing up his ton in the last over.
In reply Carl batted superbly, keeping the runs ticking enough to allow some circumspect batting at the other end. When he eventually feel, which Porges asleep, it was left to Liam and Boris to knock the final 50 odd runs off, with a few overs to spare, and excellent chase. |

Paragon were a little late, so a 35 over game was agreed. However, after a couple of quick wickets from Carl, Marlon Samuels came to the crease, and after surviving a good lbw shout set about smashing the inexperienced bowling attack to all parts. 100+ runs later Zak bowled an absolute pie to have him caught and bowled, but the damage was done, Paragon 240 odd all out.
Boris attacked to begin with (charging the fairly quick bowling) for a spirited 30 odd, Kash got 20 odd, Aiden stayed at the crease a long while and then Liam (30 odd) and sub batsman (!?!) Ben had a little charge at the end, but we were a little short, 180 odd all out. |

Overnight rain led to another damp wicket. Though for a change the team winning the toss, exiles, chose to bat first, probably expecting the wicket to get worse as the game went on. The ball was popping off a length, from Raja's end especially, and he soon had the shot playing opener out to a great catch by Sam. However Exiles then got lucky, as chances and aerial shots either evaded hands, weren't clung on to or weren't given. Carl replaced Willo and Chloe replaced Raja, but it was not until Chloe's last over that the luck changed the batsman edging a pull which hit Boris (when he wasn't looking) and somehow he clung on. Liam soon had the other bat lbw and Rich too a good catch and the returning willo took another. At 107-5, this was our chance to get on top. However, it wasn't to be as we took our foot off the pedal, allowed them too many singles and they made 200 off their 53. Liam took a couple more wickets, including a great catch from willo and when Raja got the 8th in the last over they declared 3 balls early.
A good reply was needed and a mixture of dangerous bowling (especially with the wicket) and some loose bowling meant we got off to a good start. Sars (15) edged to 3rd slip, who used 2nd slips' leg to help him hold on. Boris soon followed lbw to the change bowler. Al played himself in but was struggling for a partner; Shorty was run out, Rich departed after a few boundaries and Sam holed out, leaving us 96-5. With the pressure on, Liam joined Al and stayed with him, it took lee 25 balls to get off the mark, but by staying in and giving Al support we'd accelerated to 180 before Liam was bowled, but Norm continued where he left off and a fine knock from Al saw us home. Great effort with the bat. Let's up in the field though. |

We lost the toss and were asked to bat, quickly losing norm and Boris to some good seam bowling. However, on a excellent track and quick outfield Carl and Adil built a partnership. Carl was 'Dhoni'ed and then worse Al ran out Adil, to end a great knock, before holing out himself. This left the lower order with too much to do as we slumped from looking on for 250 to 154 all out.
Datchworth got off to a solid start, scoring quickly off Carl and Pez, but were slowed by change bowlers Chloe and Alan, who each got a wicket. Despite a quick five for from liam we couldn't quite get them all out before they passed the target. |

Two weeks running playing the two top teams in the division, the same result, we lost, but two totally different games. Last week the game ended with our team arguing, sulking and losing respect for each other, and this week we supported each other throughout the game. We set off to play Datchworth with what appeared on paper to be a weaker side than against Flitwick the week before. Once again we knew that we would be batting first, if we won the toss we needed as many batting and bowling points that we could muster and if they won the toss they would put us in and chase down whatever total we got – their recent form showed that they were perfectly capable of doing this. We duly batted, under instructions to score 200 and get 10 batting points. Against a generally accurate bowling attack and a helpful wicket (variable bounce with lots of grubbers) we had to be content with 6 batting points for our 173 for 8 off our 53 overs. A commendable effort with several people contributing, including 49 from KW. Nobody gave their wicket away with stupid shots and many were undone by the wicket rather than the bowlers.
Their innings began in a similar fashion to ours with the opening partnership getting into the forties before their skipper chopped a good ball from Bilal onto his wicket. A bowling change at both ends saw Mally and the skipper start to take wickets at fairly regular intervals. These included two fine catches by debutant Niam and Dan V and a slick stumping by Ben. Suddenly the oppo were 8 wickets down, still needing a handful of runs from batters who hadn’t been required to bat for many weeks. They were nervous and we were hopeful. Alas, they passed our total with no further loss of wickets but we were very pleased with our 14 points and our performance generally. A very good performance from everyone but a special mention for Niam, who fielded very well, taking a good catch and Alakh, playing his first game for 3 years who bowled well and is bound to keep improving if he continues to be available. Also, well done skipper for your 5 wickets. To finish the comparison between our last two matches – yes, we lost to Flitwick by 10 wickets so were bound to be demoralized, but our attitude was wrong. Yes, we had a bit of luck in the Datchworth match, but you create your own luck by competing for the whole match, not giving up because things are not going your way. Both teams enjoyed Saturday’s match and several of us even stayed for a drink and chat with the oppo – that’s the cricket I want to play! |
Sunday XI
A day for the batsmen. As mediocre bowling and some woeful fielding (including some embarrassing lack of effort from some!) meant both sides racked up the runs in a game that ended up all square on 274.

Some heavy showers Friday night led to a track that needed a bit of perseverance, and the Amptil batsmen, having elected to bat, had none. After a couple of early Raja wickets, the Amptil batsmen continued to play their shots and some excellent catching (Sahil, and Alan caught one of those ones above his head that usually go straight through!) brought a fairly rapid demise, Amptil all out for 103, Raja with 6, Liam 3 and Chloe 1.
With 10 overs before tea, Boris and Carl (as Sars was mucking about with contacts again!) set about batting these overs out and seeing us off to a wicketless start. However some loose bowling and good shots also got us off to a solid start. Carl and Boris progressed after tea; could we actually chase a score down without losing a wicket?…no! In true Compton style, Carl went, followed quickly by Sags, Boris and then Adil… Sam and Alex seeing us through to the win. |

After a few drop outs, Adil (bad back), Al (Suarez bite) & Norm (buying sun cream) a slightly weaker Compton side made the trip up to West Herts. Despite some overnight rain, with the wicket covered and on a baking day, having lost the toss, we were fielding first.
Willo made a great start, with Ben catching one opener at mid on before the other was well caught by Liam in the slips. Carl eventually got in on the act too, bowling the number 3. West Herts then set about building a partnership, seeing off the openers and Liam. With it looking like they might begin to dominate, Chloe came into the attack, bowling incredibly well to keep it tight, whilst Alan kept it reasonably tight at the other end too. Chloe had thier skipper caught, before a late flurry of wickets: Boris 2, Willo 2 and a Flopo-Boris-Willo run out restricted West Herts to 190 Ben got us off to a flyer with a 200 strike rate, but unfortunately only lasted 4 balls. Boris joined Sars and we steadily progressed, but Boris couldn't resist a pull to a ball that didn't get up, bringing Carl in. Sars battled for 24 before being caught behind and then Sam was rightfully sent back by Carl but was still run out. Porges came and went, then Carl got a bit of a stinker, but Liam and Flops saw us safely to the draw, though Liam was caught off a bouncer with one ball left for Alan to face to hit a 4 for 2 more points.....which unfortunately he missed! A good effort and with one or two more usual bats a game we could of won. Great team curry afterwards too with 8 of the 11 there. |

Boris joined the Carpenters Arms to get them up to 10 players as they (presumably) lost the toss and were asked to field.
Once Ben was out the way, Liam and Carl punished the frequently too short bowling, taking the score to 88 before Liam was spectacularly snaffled in gully. Carl continued to score, aided by Pez (17) and Aiden (8), before some late slogging from Alan (20) and Bobs (11*). Shorty ending 121* Pez and Jeff opened the bowling for Compton. But Carpenters (& Boris) looked to attack, though the other opener was soon yorked by Jeff. Pez could have had Boris caught behind off the inside edge but Carlo couldn't hang on (cheers bud), and quickly went off the boil; the number 3 targeting him as Pez also developed a no ball problem. The no 3 could have been run out walking after being caught without hearing it was a no ball, but the spirit prevailed and he was called back, eventually falling for 27. The number 4 hit over the top well to bring up a quick 49 only for Boris to go for a single that was too tight for him after the drinks break (sorry bud). Boris continued to score but with the rain beginning went for a hoik off Alan to be bowled for 86 as the rain got too heavy to continue. |

With the sun out and a bbq to look forward to Spanky won the toss and we were batting against Chorleywood.
A steady start from Boris and Sars soon accelerated as they saw off the opening bowlers. They continued to progress, despite the odd dodgey single and a couple of drops, and set a century opening stand. The second week in a row we've had a great start. They both brought up their fifties before Boris was caught - one leg side shot too many and Sars run out (by Carl). Carl and Adil, with some smashing shots, continued the start as they too got 50s, Compton 248-2 off 50. And Al and Liam hadn't batted! Chorleywood went on the attack, with Liam going for a couple of boundaries over the top, the opener aided by a let off (Alan). However, we soon had the opening pair out, one bowled by Liam the other caught off Willo. 3 & 4 set about building a partnership. Adil replaced Willo for some experimental off spin, and was quickly replaced for Alan. Liam eventually got the no.s 3 & 4 caught by Willo (from a pie) and bowled. With the established bowlers struggling to find further breakthroughs, Boris and Sam came into the attack each taking their maiden ones wicket (Boris looking especially threatening!) Liam and Carl gave it a last ditch effort to taking the remaining 4 wickets. Flopo taking a quality caught behind and Boris a less convincing gully catch (4th, maybe 5th attempt) off Carl however we couldn't get the last 2 despite a great effort. We then had a fantastic bbq, watched Brazil fizzle out again, and had a few beers. Well done to the chefs and organisers, and thanks to all for making it a great turnout. |

Sunday XI
After the u11s built mud-castles on the wicket, our Sunday game was promptly moved to North Enfield.
It wasn't a vintage batting display as a young Compton side struggled on the sloped wicket and with some slow bowling (Mally, and some even slower stuff!). Carl starred, launching a few 6s into the woods, and there were also contributions from Liam, Boris and Jeff, but the youth struggled and SCCC amassed only 150 all out. A few colts were being introduced to adult cricket, with Luke Keohane bowling a cracking opening spell, and Deleep providing a bit more experience at the other end. Overseas colt Austin replaced Luke and followed in his father's footsteps to bring up the chance of a hat trick, but tossed it up a bit too much... no ball. Aaron Kelly also came on for a tidy spell and both he and Aiden took good catches. North Enfield all out for under 100 (and Dan V's confidence in tatters). Thanks to Sally for doing another great tea and making no fuss about the change of venue, and of course North Enfield for agreeing the swap. |

Compton were playing host to Hitchin and after a few late dropouts Compton were down to ten. Winning the toss on a damp looking wicket Compton inserted the oppo. Compton were rewarded when Peri delivered a fine bouncer second ball having the batsman caught at fine leg by Willo. Hitchin rebuilt and scored steadily. Compton picked up wickets at regular intervals and a fine spell from Hassan 15 overs 4-35 and Liam 3-35 and Chloe 1-23 kept Hitchin to 180 all out.
Due to the rain delay, Compton were left with 44 overs to chase the target and, with the wicket still offering assistance, a good start was required. Boris and Hassan didn't disappoint building an opening stand of 85; Boris punishing anything short and Hassan timing the ball nicely. Boris fell to a ball finely pitched up for 43. Norm unlucky to face the change bowler (1st XI drop down) fell quickly. Al came in and steadied the ship. Compton lost their 3rd wicket with Hassan, making his maiden 50, stumped on 65. Alex brought up his fifty but was dismissed with 2 needed, not thinking about his average!! Leaving Sam to hit the winning runs finishing with a well made 10. A good victory and vital 30 points. |

Ooops !! – Wrong ground; drizzle; cover just coming off; won the toss; batting!
I am reminded of the exploits of the England football team, whilst returning from Liverpool listening to 5 live extra England were playing (running around the field!) against Costa Rica hopefuls of results going for them. Of course hoping to score a goal or two to help the cause. The commentators/analysts were not holding back in their expert comment. At one point they commented on the ‘paint drying’ on the stairwell to their commentary position, wondering if it had dried yet? Wiltshire picking himself off the ground for the umpteenth time, whilst the rest of the team were running about like headless chickens. Suddenly it was over to the Italy – Uruguay match, something had happened – ‘the sun had come out’; no really apparently Luis Suarez had taken a liking to a bit of shoulder again! Here the radio station stayed until the end, discussing the diet and digestive patterns of Suarez and how long he should be banned for. Back to England’s world cup, what next? What positives can we take from their performances? – Stunned silence, not even a comment on the weather (in true English style), not even a ‘back to the drawing board’. As an after thought they mentioned that England drew their game which to be honest was of little significance and they were coming home – so were we, it was 5.05pm! PS. There was one positive – Sheheryer (Raja) had become the proud Father of twins, a boy and a girl earlier in the week. Mum and twins were not out of hospital yet, but hopeful to be home later that weekend. On behalf of everyone at the club, massive congratulations to you all. |
Sunday XI
Fortunately Boris construed a time game for Sunday as Spartans raced to over 200 in just 30 overs, losing many a ball in the process, to bat their time and declare. Despite a decent effort in the field, with limited bowlers (top effort Jeff, who rolled back the years for a solid opening spell) and a particularly useful bat (123*) there was little we could do.
In reply, Agam and Ben got us off to a good start, though when Agam fell, Kuldeep soon followed. This brought Kash and his new bat to the wicket who saw Ben to his fifty and promptly out lobbing the ball back to the bowler. Kash continued aided by Porges, Deleep and Jeff and the run chase was on. The tension rose, particularly when Ben no balled their tired bowler for chucking - he did warn him, oh and panel umpire, it can be called by the standing umpire, not just square leg. A great effort from Alakh and Kash saw us require 5 to win off the last ball. Inside edged along the floor to mid wicket, cheeky two at best.... direct hit...in...overthrow...bails off...try another...fielder wallops the ball against the stumps...well that doesn't count!...4 runs completed...arguments galore...no fifth run attempted!!! Great fun! Game drawn, though the 40 overs we got batting to their 30 may have helped! |

We arrived and the covers were on; Yes, we’re playing on the ‘main deck’ at the Bay. By thetime we got to the changing rooms it was raining! After a couple of false starts the covers came off, ready for a 2.15pm start (42—36 over match). We lost the toss and were in the field.
A good start and the oppo were 38-4 off 15 over’s, Fawad taking all four with the help of a stunning one handed slip catch from Dave B (Skippy). A mini revival saw the oppo reach 87-5 then 104-6 with Skippy taking both wickets. Some tight bowling but six catches went down, allowing the Bay to reach 146 all out. Tayab, picking up the last four wickets for 15 runs. Consensus was we allowed them 20 runs too many.. TEA. The rain holding off we started our reply, Fawad going off like a steam train hitting 19 off the first 3 over’s, 21-1. Soon 21-2. Then started a disaster, two run outs and two stumpings saw us falter to 97-7. Stick or twist? 50 runs needed four over’s to go. Ed, following his maiden fifty last week decided to ‘twist’ 1,2...5 sixes and 1 four, 43*, supported by Dave M saw us 11 runs short, 136-9 off 36 over’s. Great effort from Ed, but the lessons to learn from this one (that got away!) better running between the wickets; keep the back foot behind the line; rotate the strike from early on; hold on to our chances. Teacher’s comment: Should and can do better! |

A typical Compton collapse, once Sars and Carl (who set a good platform) were out saw us post a meagre 131.
However, an excellent bowling performance from Willo and Carl, and a weakened Hertingforbury side, meant we bowled them out for just 53 in reply. |
Southgate Compton 2nd XI
Sunny, sunny afternoon; To win the toss or not, what to do? We didn’t and were inserted by the oppo, strange as they only had 9 men at the time.
A good start from Dan and Ben saw 32 on the board after 6 over’s. Sam joined Ben and put on 60 before returning the ball to the bowler, without bouncing. 100 off the first 20 over’s a solid start. We continued to score well with Ben’s partners coming and going in a mid-order wobble losing 4 wits for 30 runs. Everyone got a start but was unable to go on, except Ben. We got to the last 10 over’s and were three runs short of maximum batting points 197-8. The temperature was rising, the oppo were visibly beginning to feel the heat we needed to drive home the advantage. Ed was hitting the ball well getting off the mark with a straight boundary followed by an enormous 6. Robbie (28*) was at the other end as Ed began to hit out, the partnership (69) blossomed with some good running and pressure on the field. Ed (53*) hit his maiden 50 for the club, the second in one match with Ben hitting a superb 73 to claim his top score, which set the foundation of our 266-8 off 53 over’s. Good knock by all....... Quick turnaround at tea, oppo in the field for 3 and half hours we wanted to drive home the advantage. Peri opened with Raja and soon they were 14-2, Peri striking twice in his 7 over’s. Wickets fell at regular intervals with some good bowling, sound catching with ‘ball magnet’ Dan snaffling two catches, one with ice on it 37-5. A short rally saw the oppo move on to 66-6. Dave M was bowling well, taking the pace off the ball, wobbling the ball and using the facilities to bring the ball down the slope. Already with one wicket he proceeded to take the last 4 wickets, the last 3 in 7 balls one of which was sealed with a diving catch from Ben at square leg. Dave M finished with 5-18 and the oppo all out for 98. A good team performance, everyone contributed to a good win (by 168 runs) – we dealt with it! Today was a good day, well done all! |
Sunday XI
A game to forget Sunday. A reasonably weak Compton side had just pegged South Hampstead back to 90-5 after they got off to a flyer, thanks to a top effort from Liam, when the game was ruined by a cheat. A blatant nick behind and he didn't walk, but straight away admitted to our keeper he hit it. He biffed a 50 and ruined the game... worse still, SHCC gave him rapturous applause as the innings ended... obviously proud to cheat.
We didn't chase it, we didn't get close, but by that stage, who cared. We won't be returning.

We were inserted on a bit of an iffy track at Berkos, and Sars soon fell to the variable bowling (wide, wide, wide, straight one nicked to 2nd slip). Liam dollied one up that got ‘stuck in the pitch’ (if that happens) and we were in a bit of trouble. However Carl and Boris steadied the ship getting us near to the hundred mark before Carl called a little late and Boris didn’t make a 3 right before the drinks break. Carl continued onto his fifty and despite some fielding practice for short leg from Sam and Arron, Adil and Hassan came in for some late acceleration as we reached just under the 200, with Chloe looking solid at the end for a brief cameo.
In reply we kept it reasonably tight, well, once Willo found his length, not before bowling enough slow short stuff to lure their opener into having a heave at straight full one. But after that wickets were harder to come by. They’re number 3 was steady but we did keep it tight – Liam and Hassan bowling very well. As the rate required grew, so did the chances and we began to take the wickets, however, it was too little too late and with twenty odd needed off the last over and eight down they shut up shop. |

Al Payton captained the Sunday side and we posted a slightly under par 177; runs coming from the youthful batting line up: Robbie 30 odd, Ben 20 odd, Porges 20 odd and the biffing of Liam 50+ at the end.
In reply Carl got them off to a flyer with an over of poo before being replaced. We pegged them back well but with a lack of energy in the field they began to pick off the runs and despite the captains best efforts made relatively esy work of the chase. More effort next week fellas! |

The morning’s rain delayed the start of the game, but having won the toss we were able to insert Bayford & Herts on a wet wicket. However a loose ball per over saw B&H off to a good start. We (Liam and Carl) pegged them back well though when we finally made the breakthrough, as they struggled to get going until a late flurry of runs saw us set 177 to win off our 40 overs.
We got off to an awful start, with Sahil struggling to find anyone to stay with him for very long, eventually Boris joined Sahil and a partnership began, but we were 4 down with few runs half way through the innings. Sars and Boris uped the tempo, aided by the new ball and some short bowling, with Liam continuing the run chase once Boris departed. It was looking like a tense finish was on the cards until Sars was adjudged run out, and when Liam soon followed it was a tense finish for another reason, as Willo and Alan just blocked out the draw. |
Southgate Compton 2nd XI [friendly]
A delayed start on a drying wicket we put the oppo in. A good start was made with the oppo 7-2 off 5 overs and we thought we could bowl them out cheaply. The tight bowling continued with everyone chipping in but dropped catches, fourth wicket stand of 80, leg side wides (32) and a tail wag of 36 saw us facing a run chase of 208.
The scorer was suitably entertained on the boundary throughout the innings by the oppo banter, when offered a bad ball they were encouraged to "Deal with it!" and all too frequently they did. We were promised a good tea and were not disappointed. Our innings started at 5.40pm and kept pace with our oppo rate until 20 overs and drinks, 79-3 to our 77-2. Adil bashing a 102M one bounce four! (yes the boundary was that long) supported by Dan saw us start well again. A fourth wicket partnership of 96 between Kash and Dave B (34) ended when cash fell on 49 to claims of jug evasion '. However, we were not scoring quickly enough in face of some tight bowling and had fallen behind the run rate needing 61 off the last 5 overs! Using the adopted boundary encouragement of 'Deal with it' and 'run three' the last five overs were loud and fun. We didn't deal with it and fell short by 18 runs, but we all finished (8.21pm) with a smile on our faces. Good game, good day, good oppo, good effort - the way cricket should be played! |
Sunday XI
With the VPs well fed, Compton were batting first having negotiated the toss in a rare Sunday time match against Boris’ work side, the Dragons.
However, we were soon in trouble as Agam, Ben and Arron all departed with little ink required from the scorer’s pen. However Sahil joined Carl to continue where he left off the previous day and Compton were soon in the runs, Sahil eventually departing trying to heave the ball into mudgrove... and missing completely... just short of his ton. Liam continued the quick scoring and the declaration came with the 200 up off 38 overs and Carl on a solid 88*. There were murmurings as to whether this was an early declaration and with the Dragons off to a flyer SCCC were a little rattled. Alan eventually claimed their opener, but not until he’d passed his fifty as they raced to around 80 off 10ish overs. After this though we gained some control and lowered the scoring rate until a cross batted swiper looked to have put the Dragons back in control. Needing 17 from 5 overs with 5 wickets left and with Liam not having much luck (despite a great effort) Boris turned to himself in the hope that dibly-dobly was the way forward. He dropped a sitter of a caught and bowled, which fortunately led to an easy run out, then clean bowled the next bat, controversy followed as he cunningly got a plumb lbw (bowling the ball when the batsman was not fully ready though he was dithering to be fair). Great support from Carl and another run out set up a final over with 1 wicket left and 4 runs required ….dot…. wider slower one, left!….dot…. chopped on by the Dragons skipper as Compton gained an unlikely victory and the Dragons succumbed to #mentaldisintegration. It took 46 overs to bowl the dragons out – great declaration, just! |

Southgate Compton 1st XI
The ones beaten by a good Rickmansworth side. We didn't bat well enough against a bowling attack that was on the spot. We tried hard, but with catches going down, they made light work of chasing our 93.

Despite batting largely like a bunch of muppets and letting Broxbourne off to a flyer, we finally turned up after a late tea, taking two quick wickets to leave them 30-2 chasing 109. A Liam hat trick gave us belief (66-5) and the wickets continued to fall. However with 20 odd runs needed the last pair saw Broxbourne to Victory.

Well bowled Al! ..but the batsmen didn't turn up.
The ones got their season underway with a trip to Langleybury, winning the toss and opting to field. Langleybury made a slow start, with tight bowling from Carl and Willo who also took a wicket apiece. However it was the introduction of Alan Payton that made the difference, bowling the best we've seen with an excellent 6-for. Despite this, Langleybury's number 4 batted through the innings for a 70 odd which saw the reach 167-8 after their 53. A top effort from us in the field though. In reply our batsmen didn't stay at the crease as long. A miscommunication/lack of backing up caused an early demise for Liam, and then Rich played on. Carl gave a tame return catch, bringing Hassan and Al together. Although Hassan got a 20 odd, we needed him to stay there longer, looping a catch to mid off. Al ran Boris out backing up with a drive back at the bowler and then nicked behind a couple of balls later, and we cold tell it weren't gonna be our day. Porges tried to bat through, but we were all out for 96. We know our batting can be a little hit and miss, but we'll need to improve to win games. |

A top bowling performance restricted OEs to 133. Although a slow start with the bat (Carl), got us into a little hole our guest, Tony, bludgeoned us out of it.

The Context
At the half way stage, the old farts on the CCC bench were adamant that a beer match would be required after we only posted 130, firmly believing that this would be easily knocked off by CCC. Had they been watching the wicket? It was a difficult track(!!!) and 130 odd was not a bad score. Shorty had other ideas, terrorising the CCC batsmen (including their 2 overseas) to take a well earned five-for, supported well at the other end from Al Payton who had one of the overseas clean bowled leaving the ball. Barnaby bowled well for 3 wickets before Liam finished it off.

SCCC were beaten by a strong Enfield side, aided by their overseas player's ton, as he was ineligible for their 1st XI's cup game. Despite a decent bowling performance, a few too many catches went down and that ton left us with 230+ to chase; though Chloe taking two wickets in two balls was a highlight.
In reply we lost early wickets, before Hassan and Boris came together. Hassan looked good scoring 20 odd before skying a ball that deserved to go. Geoff had a decent stint at the crease without troubling the scorer, and came up with some innovative ways to play the bouncer too! Boris reached his 50 before being caught, Kuldeep hit a few before being run out and Raja gave us a few fireworks at the end of the innings, but we were well short. Let's have a bit more effort in the field next week and not fizzle out after drinks. |

Southgate Compton 1st XI [friendly]
We won the toss and elected to bowl with instant success. Compton put in a good bowling performance keeping bowling the opposition out for 148. Wickets fell with one each for Peri & Dave, two for both Liam & Robbie and four for Hassan.
The Compton reply followed the same story, losing five quick wickets until a partnership between Dave Malleson and Liam Frame gave Compton some hope, before Liam fell for 72 and Dave for 17 soon after, being the only two batsmen to reach double figures. Compton finished up twenty short. On reflection, a game Compton should have easily won. |

Sunday XI
On a rather grim day Compton lost the toss and were inserted into the field. Despite the wet conditions the pitch held up really well and Compton put in a strong bowling display, which reduced the opposition to 157 all out. Fawad bowled particularly well in ever diminishing weather conditions to collect 4 wickets, Robbie and Raja collected wickets along the way.
After tea D/L ensued and Compton was given a total of 109 off 20 overs to claim victory. Harrow Weald had a couple of quiet overs to start but Peri and Hassan had other ideas and put in a good 50+ partnership to complete the game in just 14 overs. A fantastic batting display, which awarded Compton consecutive Sunday wins. Well Done! |

Not the greatest of games, but great to be playing again.
Rosslyn struggled on the slow popping wicket, with too many batsmen opting for the ill advised hoik to leg. Wickets fell regularly shared between Carl, Alan, Bobs, Liam, Dave B, Kuldeep and finally Niam with Rosslyn all out for 98. And had their star 'hoiker' walked when edging behind, it could have been half that. Our fielding was a little rusty, with a couple of drops, including a howler from Boris...Boris...Boris... - despite calling it three times, and having plenty of time, he didn't get near it. Ben and Liam opened our reply and were off to a solid start until Liam had a close lbw shout when one kept low, and soon after looped up a catch for 20ish. Sam came in and batted with Ben until drinks looking very solid and controlled. However, inexperienced at drinks breaks, Sam was bowled first ball afterwards, for another 20 odd. This left Arron Porges to come in and finish the job with a quick 20 n.o, preventing Ben from completing his fifty. (If you're not sure what people scored - just presume its twenty!) A solid start for Compton. |
